The Dryden Native Friendship Centre is currently accepting resumes for the position of Wasa-Nabin Program Coordinator. The purpose of the Wasa-Nabin Program is to provide support and guidance within a cultural framework for at risk youth aged 13-18.
Schedule:
Regular full-time hours:
Summer Months (July-August) Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm, 35 hours per week. Some flexibility to meet program needs.
Winter Months (September-June) Monday – Friday 10:00am – 6pm, 35 hours per week. Some flexibility to meet program needs.
This position is a regular full-time employment opportunity and is eligible for group retirement, extended benefits, and paid time off.
Duties including but not limited to:
Development and implementation of a full range of program services.
To ensure culturally based youth development principles and practices in programming.
To promote awareness and ensure access to the Wasa-Nabin Program; Urban Indigenous youth ages 13-17.
Conduct needs assessments for youth and to develop a plan of action.
To initiate and participate in case conferences as necessary to endure needs of youth are met including referrals to other in-house programs or other community service providers.
To co-ordinate individual and group activities (physical, social) as required to meet needs of program clients.
Maintenance of secure and confidential filing system and accurate Database.
To ensure a balance of approaches is available to meet the needs of all youth attending and participating in the program.
To liaise with community youth services.
To assist in youth development through increasing life skills, safety awareness, nutrition and healthy physical development activities, anti-violence training and youth diversion initiatives.
To increase cultural understanding of youth and their families.
To engage in one-to-one counselling and peer support.
To promote intergenerational activities.
Qualifications:
College Diploma or University Degree in a related field (i.e., Social Service Work, Indigenous Studies)
Possess a valid CPR/First Aid or willing to be certified
Possess a driver’s license with a good driving record – A Drivers Abstract will be required
An acceptable Criminal Records Check – vulnerable sector will be condition of employment
Shall possess 2-4 years work related experience in the social service work area, preferably in youth related work
Knowledge of social, cultural and recreational needs and interests of children and youth
Ability to work professionally, collaboratively with youth and their families as well as agency, community and agency personnel
Skills and experience in presenting educational workshops and facilitating groups, in particular youth
Excellent computer skills, written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of Indigenous Culture and the social reality of Indigenous youth
Knowledge of Friendship Centre programs and other community programs that provide services to youth
Ability to work with minimum supervision and be capable of coordinating activities with other Friendship Centre programs
